If the need for acoustics has not been considered before or during a project, this can at best result in delays and at worst result in re-working and associated costs. It therefore would be prudent to use an acoustics engineer at the start of a project. This paper looks at the expectations that other discipline engineers and project management should have of the work of an acoustics consultant / engineer. Starting from the point where acoustics advice and design are found to be needed, the paper covers the selection of sound level criteria; preparation of sound power level allocation plans; an overview of the use of 3D acoustic modelling and how the results obtained may be used in the application of sound level control measures. Focus will be on sound radiation and the reduction of the risk of fatigue failure in piping systems.
