The production of LNG on a small scale has been a technology practiced for more than 70 years and over the last 10 years we have witnessed a strong and determined push to increase the scale of production ostensibly to drive down production costs. But the past few years has seen the gradual development and awareness that there is a viable business model based on small scale LNG production.
The scale of the business is 50 to 100 times smaller than the scale of the typical base load facilities which are built on the premise of exporting gas over significant distances. Not withstanding, some 20 million tonnes of LNG are produced on small scale facilities each year. So how can such a business model make sense in today’s world?
This paper will review the development of small scale LNG production and distribution facilities and note the great strides being made to improve the efficiency and cost basis for the production of LNG on a small scale.
