Carbon Capture and Storage: The “Storage” challenges

John H Hargreaves, PSN, UK

Carbon capture and storage is seen as one of the key future technologies to meet the increasing International pledges of reductions in greenhouse gases. There have been and still are significant advances in the”capture” part of this technology but the “storage” aspect still leaves many unanswered questions.  Key to the storage is the suitability of the repository and the cost effectiveness of the Project.  This paper reviews the issues and the challenges facing the decision to progress with offshore re-injection, and provides a blue print to the offshore design of carbon injection facilities and, where the opportunity exists, enhanced oil recovery
