The Hot-Seat

A message from our Chairperson, Gary Bowerbank.

"February already!! Where does the time go? They say time flies when you’re having fun, so we must all be having so much fun. 😊

The pace of the Energy Transition does not let up and I am sure you are all seeing the impact in your own companies, as well as in the public domain. More and more projects producing green electrons, as well as more CCS projects are being announced, all around the backdrop of continued high gas prices.

However, we should also still take time out to reflect and connect with each other, and what better way than via GPA Europe. Your first such opportunity will be the CCUS Webinar (free for members) on February 17th, which is already seeing record numbers signing up. Beyond that there are other Webinars (Hydrogen) but also high hopes of a face-to-face event in May! Visit gpaeurope.com/events for more details.

Finally, I would like to thank all of our members who have paid their fees for 2022, we really do appreciate your support. For those still to pay, please kindly do so as soon as possible to ensure you get all the benefits of membership.

Stay safe and keep having fun."

Paper of the Month

This month we are looking back to one of our CCUS papers from Clement Salais, Axens. Presented at our Virtual Event Series - 22 April 2021.

"Optimized CO2 capture with DMX™ process"

"CO2 capture & storage is foreseen as a necessity to limit global warming, as indicated by the International Energy Agency. Major initiatives have to be initiated in a near future with concrete actions to get efficient results in limiting global warming. DMX™ process is foreseen as a key driver to initiate such transition in the industrial world. This process is based on a second-generation amine solvent, allowing to drastically reducing CO2 capture cost in comparison to more conventional solvent such as MEA and others available solvents.

Based on the actual knowledge, techno-economic studies have been performed for 3 study cases and show significant advantage of DMX™ technology relatively to MEA : up to 30 % reduction in OPEX can be obtained for lower or similar CAPEX, depending on the condition.

Such performance would be demonstrated within the H2020 3D Project, based on pilot test on real industrial gas from ArcelorMittal steel mill plant in Dunkirk (France). The H2020 3D Project could also study the whole value chain for an industrial CCS application linking ArcelorMittal plant in Dunkirk to potential storages in the North Sea. The 3D Project coordinated by IFPEN involves 11 companies and academic partners from Europe."
