Nitrogen Rejection in Natural Gas Processing

Presented at 26 September 1991 Meeting - Purification Processes in LondonBy: Richard Boocock and Scott Trautmann Air Products PLCNitrogen is a naturally occurring inert component of natural gas that must be reduced to acceptable levels before introduction to natural gas pipelines. This paper examines the application of Nitrogen Rejection Units (NRU's) to the production of pipeline quality natural gas. The reasons for removing nitrogen, the various cryogenic cycles used, and particularly the many parameters associated with their design are discussed. Associated topics such as integration with NGL recovery and the possibility of helium recovery are also included.
