The Hot-Seat

A message from our Chairperson, Gary Bowerbank.

"As more and more countries in Europe remove the legal measures imposed to manage the COVID pandemic, the emphasis moves to a personal responsibility to still do what is best for society. The ability for more of us to meet up face to face with colleagues and business associates is welcome for many of us and ultimately will be good for business and our mental health. However, we should be mindful that there will be many people still very anxious about the return to ‘normal’, we must respect that and allow everyone to readjust to face to face engagements gradually. What can we do?

  • Still support hybrid ways of working, I think for many of us this will be the norm as makes business sense as well as helping people with work/life balance
  • Give people the opportunity to come together – but do not pressure people
  • Take simple precautions (washing/sanitising hands, face masks in congested spaces, vaccinations, etc.) to limit the spread

So speaking of coming together, what better way to start reintegrating with the Gas Processing community than to come to our May Conference, “Roadmap for the Transition”. We have some excellent keynote speakers lined up and we are sure you will find it worthwhile. If you have ideas for papers, then we are still open for abstract submissions, please reach out to [email protected].

See you all soon."

GPA Europe CCUS Webinar
Thank you!

Thank you from all of us at GPA Europe to Richa Bhusan, Shell Technology Centre Bangalore; Ricardo Wanderley, Aker Carbon Capture; and Chet Biliyok, Petrofac for presenting at our last Webinar on Thursday 17 February. It was our best ever attended webinar with 210 attendees!

Richa's presentation focused on showcasing tools and handles to achieve the optimizations of power and steam in Carbon Capture Designs. Ricardo's presentation focused on the design of the ACC’s Mobile Test Unit (MTU), some of its remarkable deliverables, and how the MTU helped shape the ACC™ process and our confidence in our technology. Whilst Chet's presentation discussed Petrofac's findings from a Front end engineering design (FEED) study for deploying hot potassium carbonate process for post combustion CO2 capture.

Did you miss the session? The recording from our webinar is available for GPA Europe members to watch for free on our website here.

GPA Europe Awards

As a reward for our fantastic speakers, we present 2 awards each year at our AGM in November.

The Best Paper Award is selected by our conference attendees and is based on the feedback scores received.

The Aungier Award is for the best paper presented by one of our Young Professionals at our conferences. The winner is decided by our Technical Committee. Alongside the award, the winner will get £1,000.

Could this be you? Our Call for Papers for our Conferences in 2022 is now open! Contact us for more information.

In Brief

Check out our latest issue of In Brief! This issue reports on the GPA Europe Virtual Conference held in May 2021.

We have our regular 'View from the Top' by our Chairperson Gary Bowerbank, discussing 'Gas processing industry makes the big headlines!'.

The lead article has been contributed by our very own Gary Bowerbank, Adrian Finn, Gauthier Perdu and Myrian Schenk. The article is titled 'European gas in a more import-dependent future' and has also been published in the World Petroleum Congress program.

If you would like to contribute to our May 2022 issue, we have an opportunity to get involved. A chance to promote your name through the industry. Please contact the GPA E Team for more information - [email protected]

Paper of the Month

This month we are looking back to one of our Hydrogen papers from Nicola Chodorowska, Wood. Presented at our Virtual Conference May 2021.

"Hydrogen value chain analysis comparing different transport vectors: Using Liquid Hydrogen, LNG, Ammonia and Methylcyclohexane as energy carriers between Qatar and the UK"

"Meeting the anticipated ten-fold increase in hydrogen requirements by 2050 has led to many studies evaluating the most techno-economic means to achieve this target. Whilst fully green large scale value chains are still some way off there is adequate hydrocarbon infrastructure in place where blue hydrogen could be produced. This paper assesses the options to convert a portion of the LNG supply chain already in place between Qatar and the UK into blue hydrogen and the different transport vectors to convey the hydrogen. Transporting the hydrogen as liquid or in the form of ammonia or other Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers (LOHC) such as methylcyclohexane are common comparisons, however retaining LNG as the energy carrier should also be considered.

It is shown with currently available technology that LNG as the transport vector is economic compared to ammonia and LOHC with liquid hydrogen still somewhat more expensive."
